The Greatest Story Ever Told

In 1914, in the midst of World War I, German troops and Allied soldiers called a cease fire and played a game of soccer. The date? December 25th, Christmas day. The hallowed day is also when George Washington crossed the Delaware River, Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as the final president of the Soviet Union and Charlemagne was crowned emperor.

Though Jesus was most likely born in September, countless people celebrate his life and message of faith, hope and love in their heart of hearts perhaps more than ever on Christmas day.

It is a day without a doubt filled with hopes and dreams in which we live to our highest ideals of what makes us who we are. It is a day of song, presents, warm food, conversation, laughter, family and friends. It is a day when smiles are contagious, strangers exchange heart felt greetings and at least for a moment, things seem to be closer to the way they were meant to be. It is a day perhaps best encapsulated in the anticipation that, “unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given” (Isaiah 9:6).

When I was an undergrad student, musician Steve Camp spoke to our class. He shared that one day he was at the hospital when he was asked to visit a woman who had been severely abused a number of times by various people. She found herself in the emergency ward unable to cope any longer, ready to commit suicide. Steve agreed to try and help her, but found her unresponsive in her room, just blankly staring at the wall.

He sat down and talked to her for about an hour, telling her about his life and family. The entire time she refused to acknowledge his presence, just staring at the wall in front of her. Finally he got up to leave, telling her that maybe he would see her again. As he reached the door she spoke for the first time asking, “Why don’t you want to kill yourself like I want to kill myself?”

Thinking for a moment Steve replied, “Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.” He agreed to come back later that week, and before long she put her trust in the love of Christ and found peace in her heart. Within weeks she was released from the hospital, now a different person with a spring in her step and a smile on her lips.

After a couple years she moved away. One day she wrote to Steve and told him, “I tree you.” She was getting married and requested he and his wife attend her wedding. They gladly attended, inspired by the remarkable transformation in her life. After the reception he asked her what she meant when she ended her letters, “I tree you.”

She began to recall the hurt in her life, the pain of betrayal and abuse by people who were supposed to love her. “People too easily say ‘I love you.’ The ones who said it to me were the ones who hurt me the most. I don’t know what love is, but I know that trees are beautiful. That is something I can relate to, so I end all my letters that way.” Then pausing she asked, “Are there any trees in the Bible?”

Steve looked her in the eye and said, “Oh yes, there is the most amazing tree in the Bible, where Jesus gave his life to show us the way to the kingdom of God.” At that they all embraced a moment that transcended time.

Some 2500 years ago Isaiah continued his infamous line unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given by stating, “and he will be called Wonderful.” Now some two thousand years after the promise was fulfilled in Bethlehem, the birth of the Prince of Peace is still changing our world, one life at a time.

And while December 25th entails many important moments in history, may you find this year to be the most memorable and 2010 the best there ever was.
